About Kansas

🏛 Tallgrass Prairie National Preserve

Kansas occupies the geographic center of the contiguous United States — the geodetic center of the lower 48 states is marked by a small monument in Lebanon, Kansas — and its identity is deeply rooted in that position: the prairie state at the heart of America, shaped by the Great Plains wind, the cattle drives that made Dodge City legendary, and the agricultural cycles of the Great American breadbasket. It is not a state for travelers seeking dramatic geological spectacle; it is a state for those who appreciate the distinctive beauty of the open prairie horizon and the genuinely American stories embedded in its landscape.

The Flint Hills of eastern Kansas are the most significant landscape in the state — the last remaining intact tallgrass prairie in North America. Before European settlement, tallgrass prairie covered 170 million acres from Manitoba to Texas; today, less than 4% remains, and the vast majority of that remnant is in the Kansas Flint Hills. The Tallgrass Prairie National Preserve near Strong City protects 10,894 acres of this extraordinary ecosystem — rolling hills of big bluestem, Indian grass, switchgrass, and over 500 other plant species, maintained by prescribed burns and the natural grazing of reintroduced bison. The Flint Hills Scenic Byway (K-177) runs 47 miles through the heart of the preserve and is genuinely one of the American heartland's most moving drives — particularly in late summer when the grasses turn golden and the sky fills with migrating raptors.

Dodge City is the most historically evocative Wild West town in America — the end-point of the Chisholm and Western Cattle Trails where millions of Texas longhorns were driven north between 1867 and 1886, and where figures including Wyatt Earp and Bat Masterson policed the stockyard town with a combination of legal authority and personal violence that defined the frontier mythology. The Boot Hill Museum complex recreates Front Street in 1872 with authentic period buildings, gunfight demonstrations, and the original Boot Hill cemetery where those killed in gunfights were buried with their boots on.

The Kansas Cosmosphere and Space Center in Hutchinson is one of the most remarkable and least-known science museums in America — its collection of space hardware, including the Apollo 13 command module Odyssey and extensive Soviet space program artifacts, is second only to the Smithsonian's National Air and Space Museum in Washington DC. The museum's artifact restoration laboratory is also the most active in the country for restoring historic spacecraft. The Wizard of Oz birthplace in Emporia (L. Frank Baum set the story's Kansas farm in gray, flat prairie as Dorothy's point of departure) and the Oz museum in Liberal honor one of cinema's most beloved stories.

Our Take Based on traveller reviews, editorial research & destination data The Tallgrass Prairie National Preserve is one of those landscapes that requires patience — it rewards those who slow down, sit with it, and let 170 million acres of what used to be here sink in. The Flint Hills Scenic Byway (K-177) in late summer when the grasses go golden is one of those drives that stays with you. The Kansas Cosmosphere in Hutchinson is a remarkable museum that almost no one outside Kansas has heard of — its space hardware collection (Apollo 13 command module, Soviet cosmonaut suits) is second only to the Smithsonian's. Dodge City's Boot Hill Museum is a more honest account of the Wild West than most — it doesn't sanitise the violence.
