Grand canyons, iconic cities & coastlines on two oceans — North America has it all.
Browse Destinations ↓North America stretches from the Arctic Ocean to the Panama Canal — a continental landmass of extraordinary geographical variety that encompasses temperate rainforests, volcanic archipelagos, desert canyon country, Caribbean beaches, and some of the most productive agricultural land on earth. It is home to three of the world's most visited tourist destinations (New York, Mexico City, and Cancún), the world's longest national coastline (Canada), the most biodiverse marine environment north of the equator (the Sea of Cortez), and two of the world's most spectacular mountain ranges. For travellers, this diversity means that North America can satisfy almost any travel appetite without requiring a flight to another continent.
The United States, Canada, and Mexico each offer travel experiences so different from one another that they deserve to be considered as distinct destinations rather than a single region. Canada's wilderness — the Rocky Mountain national parks, the boreal forest, the Haida Gwaii archipelago, and the northern lights of the Yukon — is among the most spectacular in the world, with infrastructure that makes it accessible to visitors of all fitness levels. Mexico's cultural depth — 35 UNESCO World Heritage Sites, 68 recognised Indigenous languages still spoken, and a culinary tradition listed on UNESCO's intangible cultural heritage register — rivals any country in Europe for historical richness. And the United States offers a scale of diversity that makes it a continent unto itself: the jazz bars of New Orleans, the canyon country of the Colorado Plateau, the redwood forests of Northern California, and the art deco hotels of South Beach are as different from each other as France is from Finland.
In 2026, North America's travel landscape is being shaped by several strong trends. Mexico's Pacific coast — particularly Oaxaca city and the Oaxacan coast around Puerto Escondido — has become one of the world's most in-demand travel destinations, drawing chefs, surfers, and design-conscious travellers to a region that combines extraordinary gastronomy with world-class waves and relatively affordable prices. Canada's Indigenous tourism has matured into world-class experiences — from coastal First Nations cultural tours in British Columbia to aurora-watching programs run by Cree guides in northern Saskatchewan. And the United States' national park system, celebrating its 110th anniversary, continues to draw record visitors to landscapes — Zion, Arches, Glacier, the Everglades — of matchless beauty.
North America's travel regions each have a distinct identity and offer different travel experiences. Here's where to focus depending on what you're looking for.
Vancouver, Whistler, Banff, Jasper, Victoria. British Columbia and Alberta are Canada's most visited travel region. The Sea-to-Sky corridor from Vancouver to Whistler is one of the world's great scenic drives. Banff and Jasper national parks offer turquoise glacial lakes and wildlife viewing of extraordinary quality. Vancouver combines mountain backdrop with Pacific Ocean waterfront and one of North America's best food scenes. Best visited June–September for hiking, November–April for skiing.
Cancún, Cabo San Lucas, Puerto Vallarta, Riviera Maya. Mexico's Caribbean and Pacific coasts draw more than 40 million international visitors annually. The Yucatán Peninsula (Cancún, Tulum, Playa del Carmen) combines Caribbean beach perfection with Maya archaeological sites and cenote swimming. Baja California's Los Cabos offers the sea of Cortez's extraordinary marine life alongside luxury resort infrastructure. Both coasts operate as year-round destinations.
Mexico City, Oaxaca, Guadalajara, San Cristóbal de las Casas. Mexico's interior offers cultural experiences that rival Europe for depth and accessibility. Mexico City is one of the world's great capitals — 35 world-class museums, the finest collection of muralist art anywhere, and a restaurant scene (currently home to two World's 50 Best restaurants) that has made it a serious food destination. Oaxaca's mezcal bars, pre-Columbian ruins, and extraordinary Indigenous textile market are genuinely extraordinary.
Costa Rica, Panama, Guatemala, Belize. Central America offers some of the world's best eco-tourism at prices that make Southeast Asia look expensive. Costa Rica has the most developed infrastructure — national parks covering 25% of the country, zip-line tours, volcano hot springs, and Pacific surf. Belize has the second-largest barrier reef in the world. Guatemala's Antigua and Lake Atitlán, surrounded by three volcanoes, are among the most beautiful colonial and natural landscapes in the Americas. The Panama Canal remains one of engineering history's most astonishing achievements.
Toronto, Montréal, Québec City, Nova Scotia, PEI. Eastern Canada's cities are among the most liveable and underrated in North America. Québec City's UNESCO-listed Old Town is the closest thing to a European walled city on the continent. Montréal's food, festival, and underground city culture rivals Paris in ambition. Prince Edward Island's red sand beaches and lobster suppers are the antidote to over-tourism. Nova Scotia's dramatic coastline and Celtic heritage make it one of Canada's most rewarding road-trip destinations.
Whistler, Banff, Lake Louise, Jasper. The Canadian Rockies consistently rank among the world's top mountain destinations. Lake Louise and Moraine Lake represent alpine beauty at its most iconic. The Icefields Parkway between Banff and Jasper is one of the world's great scenic drives. Whistler Blackcomb is the largest ski resort in North America. Jasper's dark sky preserve offers the finest aurora viewing accessible to most travellers. These destinations are best booked well in advance — particularly accommodation in peak summer (July–August).
North America's vast size means there's always somewhere in perfect season. Here's how to plan by region and interest.
The peak season for Eastern Canada and the US Northeast — Vermont, New Hampshire, and Québec's fall foliage (late September–October) is one of the world's great natural spectacles. Mexico's interior destinations (Mexico City, Oaxaca, Guanajuato) are at their best with clear skies and comfortable temperatures. Canadian Rockies hiking runs until early October with golden larches transforming the landscape. Shoulder season crowds and prices make this an excellent value window.
Whistler, Banff, and Lake Louise ski seasons peak December–February with reliable powder and short lift queues outside holidays. Mexico's beach destinations (Cancún, Cabo, Riviera Maya) are at their peak — warm, dry, and busy. Costa Rica's Pacific coast is dry and sunny December–April. The Caribbean Islands within North America's orbit enjoy their finest weather December–April. Christmas and New Year periods require booking well in advance everywhere.
Spring is ideal for the Canadian Rockies before summer crowds arrive — May wildflowers and the first meltwater in mountain streams. Mexico's interior and the Yucatán are comfortable April–May before summer heat peaks. Central America's Pacific coast transitions from dry to green season in May — lower prices, lush landscapes, and excellent surf conditions. Nova Scotia and PEI open their seasons in June with long northern evenings and full lobster season.
Summer in the Canadian Rockies is the most visited period — long days, all facilities open, and the most reliable weather for hiking. Banff's Lake Louise and Moraine Lake require early morning arrivals (before 6am) to avoid crowds at peak summer. Alaska cruises and land tours operate June–August. The Caribbean coast of Mexico can be humid and stormy in peak summer, but the Yucatán's cenotes and ruins are uncrowded compared to March break.
