What Makes It Worth It

🏛 Stanley Park & Mountains

Vancouver occupies one of the most enviable positions of any city on earth — hemmed in by the Pacific Ocean to the west, the snow-capped Coast Mountains to the north, and the fertile Fraser Valley to the east. The result is a city where you can ski in the morning and kayak in the afternoon, where seaplanes take off from the downtown harbour, and where the skyline of glass towers reflects both mountain and water with equal beauty. Stanley Park, a 400-hectare old-growth forest peninsula that juts into Burrard Inlet, is Vancouver's greatest civic treasure — its seawall path circles the entire park and offers unbroken views of the Lions Gate Bridge, the North Shore mountains, and English Bay.

Vancouver's neighbourhoods each have a distinct character that rewards exploration on foot. Gastown, the city's original settlement, preserves Victorian red-brick architecture and a famous steam clock alongside the best cocktail bars and independent boutiques in the city. Granville Island is a converted industrial peninsula housing a legendary public market, craft breweries, theatres, and studios where artists work in glass, ceramics, and textiles. Kitsilano Beach commands views of the entire downtown skyline across English Bay and remains the city's most beloved summer gathering spot. Richmond, just south of the city, hosts one of North America's best dim sum strips — a kilometre of Hong Kong-style restaurants serving har gow and siu mai to Saturday morning queues.

The outdoor activities available from Vancouver are staggering in variety and quality. Whistler Blackcomb, North America's premier ski resort, sits 120 kilometres north on the Sea-to-Sky Highway — a road widely considered one of the most scenic drives on the continent, hugging the fjord of Howe Sound beneath granite walls. Grouse Mountain rises directly behind the city, accessible by gondola for skiing in winter and hiking in summer. The Stawamus Chief, a 652-metre granite monolith in Squamish, is one of the world's premier rock climbing destinations. Sea kayaking around the Gulf Islands, whale watching in the Salish Sea, and salmon fishing in the Fraser River are all within easy reach.

The city's food scene reflects its extraordinary cultural diversity — over 50% of Vancouver's residents were born outside Canada, with large communities from China, India, the Philippines, Korea, and Iran all contributing to a restaurant landscape of remarkable depth. Chinatown, one of the oldest in North America, anchors the east side alongside a growing creative district. The craft beer scene has exploded, with over 50 breweries operating in Metro Vancouver. Vancouver consistently ranks among the world's most liveable cities, and those who visit quickly understand why — few places combine urban amenities, natural grandeur, and cultural richness in such balanced proportion.

Our Take Based on traveller reviews, editorial research & destination data The Sea-to-Sky Highway to Whistler (Highway 99) is worth driving even without skiing — the road hugs the Howe Sound fjord beneath granite walls for the first hour, then climbs through old-growth forest to the resort. Granville Island's public market is exceptional on weekday mornings; weekends are packed. Stanley Park's seawall (10km) is the mandatory first-day activity — rent a bike rather than walking it. Richmond's dim sum (specifically the Parkshoppe area on Alexandra Road) is the best in North America outside Hong Kong. June through September is reliably excellent; the rest of the year is rainy, and not lightly.
