June is one of the best months to travel — European summer begins, Asia's shoulder season offers great value, and crowds haven't hit their August peak. Here are 12 destinations that are perfect in June.
June sits in a sweet spot for travel: European summer is just beginning (before the August rush), long-haul flights are cheaper than peak July/August, and shoulder-season destinations in Asia offer excellent value. Here are 12 destinations that hit their peak in June.
🏰 Europe in June — Before the Crowds
1. Santorini, Greece
June is Santorini's best month — warm (mid-70s°F), dry, and not yet at the crushing August capacity. The caldera views are identical to the Instagram photos, and you can actually get a table at sunset restaurants without a reservation made 6 weeks ahead. Fly in on a Tuesday or Wednesday for the cheapest fares.
2. Barcelona, Spain
June in Barcelona means beach weather, festival season (Sonar music festival runs in June), and Gaudí without the worst of the queues. The Barceloneta beach is swimmable from June. Avoid the last week of June when the city fills with festival crowds.
Don't miss: Park Güell at opening time (8am) to beat the selfie crowds.
3. Provence, France
The lavender fields of Provence bloom in late June — the famous purple rows around Valensole and Gordes are at peak colour between June 20 and July 10. Combine with Avignon's Papal Palace and the Luberon villages for one of Europe's most picturesque road trips.
4. Amalfi Coast, Italy
June is the best month on the Amalfi Coast — warm enough to swim, but the midsummer gridlock on the coastal road hasn't kicked in. Take the ferry between villages instead of driving. The water is crystal clear in June before the summer algae bloom.
🌏 Asia in June — Shoulder Season Value
5. Japan (Tokyo & Kyoto)
June is Japan's rainy season (tsuyu) — which sounds bad but means significantly cheaper flights and hotels, fewer tourists, and lush green landscapes. The rain is mostly light drizzle, not torrential downpours. Hydrangeas bloom across Kamakura and Kyoto in June — one of Japan's most underrated flower seasons.
Bonus: The Gion Matsuri festival in Kyoto begins in July — arrive late June to catch the preparations and beat the crowds.
6. Bali, Indonesia
June marks the start of Bali's dry season — the best time to visit. Clear skies, low humidity, perfect beach weather. This is also when rice terraces in Ubud are at their greenest after the wet season rains. Book accommodation early — June fills up fast.
7. Maldives
Counterintuitively, June is excellent value in the Maldives. The wet season technically starts, but in practice June sees only short afternoon showers with mostly sunny mornings. Resort prices drop 30–50% from peak. Diving visibility is still excellent.
🌎 Americas in June
8. Iceland
June is peak Iceland — the midnight sun means 24-hour daylight, all highland roads are open, and puffins arrive on the Westman Islands. The Golden Circle, Jökulsárlón glacier lagoon, and the Westfjords are all at their most accessible. June is also before the worst of the tourist peak (July–August).
Book: The Blue Lagoon and popular tours sell out — reserve before you fly.
9. Canadian Rockies
June is the gateway month for Banff — the crowds of July haven't arrived, but most hiking trails are open. Lake Louise and Moraine Lake are accessible from late May. The shoulder season means better hotel rates and you can actually find parking at popular trailheads.
10. New York City, USA
June in NYC is perfect — warm but not the swampy humidity of July and August. Central Park's SummerStage begins free concerts in June. The High Line is gorgeous. And the city's energy in early summer, before everyone leaves for the Hamptons, is unmatched.
🏖️ Beach Destinations in June
11. Azores, Portugal
June is the Azores' sweet spot — whale watching season is ending, wildflowers are still blooming, and the weather is warm enough to swim in the volcanic hot springs. Flores and Faial islands are dramatic and almost tourist-free even in peak season. Direct flights from Lisbon are under €100.
12. Croatia — Dubrovnik & Hvar
June is the best month in Croatia — the Adriatic is warm enough to swim (70°F+), the summer party season on Hvar is starting, and the Game of Thrones crowds in Dubrovnik haven't hit their peak yet. Split makes an excellent base — day trips to Hvar, Brač, and Korčula all run from Split harbour.
