Best US States to Visit in 2026: Ranked and Reviewed

✍️ DestinationRank Team · May 6, 2026 · 10 min read

From the Grand Canyon to the streets of New York, Hawaii's beaches to Montana's wilderness — these are the US states delivering the best travel experiences in 2026, ranked and reviewed.

The United States is one of the most geographically and culturally diverse countries on Earth. From Arctic wilderness to tropical islands, from desert canyons to Appalachian forests, the range of experiences within a single country is staggering. These are the states that consistently deliver the best travel experiences — whether you're after outdoor adventure, city culture, food, or history.

1. Utah — Five Parks. One State. Nothing Else Like It.

No state packs more dramatic landscape per square mile than Utah. Zion, Bryce Canyon, Arches, Canyonlands, and Capitol Reef — five of America's most spectacular national parks — all sit within a single state, making Utah the ultimate road trip destination. The red rock formations of Arches are unlike anything else on the continent; the hoodoos of Bryce Canyon are equally surreal. The Mighty 5 road trip connecting all five parks takes about a week and is one of America's great drives.

Best time: March–June and September–November. Avoid July–August heat in the canyon country.

2. Wyoming — Where America Still Feels Wild

Wyoming has fewer people than almost any other state — and more wild land. Yellowstone, America's first national park, sits mostly within Wyoming's borders, offering geysers, hot springs, bison herds, and wolf packs in one extraordinary ecosystem. Grand Teton National Park, just south of Yellowstone, has arguably the most dramatic mountain scenery in the lower 48. Jackson Hole adds world-class skiing in winter and excellent hiking in summer.

Best time: June–September for wildlife and hiking; December–March for skiing.

3. Arizona — A Canyon So Big It Doesn't Feel Real

The Grand Canyon alone would be enough — a mile-deep, 277-mile-long gorge that genuinely stops you in your tracks no matter how many photos you've seen. But Arizona has far more: the red rocks of Sedona, the saguaro forests of Saguaro National Park, the ancient cliff dwellings of Montezuma Castle, and the otherworldly landscape of Antelope Canyon. Phoenix and Scottsdale add excellent restaurants and resorts for those who want comfort alongside adventure.

Best time: March–May and September–November. Summers are extremely hot.

4. Montana — The America Most People Never See

Glacier National Park in the northwest corner of Montana is one of America's most spectacular and least-visited major parks. The Going-to-the-Sun Road — a 50-mile highway cutting through the heart of the park — is one of the great scenic drives in North America, open only in summer. Beyond Glacier, Montana's Beartooth Highway, the Missouri River Breaks, and the stretch of the Yellowstone River through Paradise Valley offer wilderness experiences that feel genuinely remote. This is the real American West.

Best time: June–September. Going-to-the-Sun Road opens late June.

5. Hawaii — There Is Nowhere Else Like This in the Country

Hawaii is unlike anywhere else in the United States — a chain of volcanic islands in the middle of the Pacific with beaches ranging from white to black to green, active lava flows, snorkeling with sea turtles, and a culture rooted in Polynesian tradition. Each island has a distinct character: Oahu has Honolulu and Waikiki; Maui has the Road to Hana and Haleakalā volcano; the Big Island has active lava fields and diverse climate zones; Kauai has the dramatic Nā Pali Coast.

Best time: April–October, though Hawaii is a year-round destination.

6. Colorado — You Can See the Mountains From the City. Go to Them.

Colorado combines outdoor recreation at the highest level with genuinely excellent cities. Denver is one of America's most liveable cities, with a craft beer scene, excellent restaurants, and the Rocky Mountains visible from downtown. Rocky Mountain National Park is one of the most visited in the country, with accessible alpine tundra above the tree line. The ski resorts of Vail, Aspen, Telluride, and Breckenridge are world-class in winter; in summer the same mountains offer hiking, mountain biking, and wildflower meadows.

Best time: June–September for hiking; December–March for skiing.

7. California — One State. A Lifetime of Trips.

California is effectively several destinations in one state. San Francisco and the Bay Area offer one of the world's great city experiences. Los Angeles has beaches, Hollywood, and a food scene that rivals any city in the country. Yosemite's granite walls and waterfalls are iconic. The Pacific Coast Highway from Big Sur to Malibu is one of the world's great road trips. Death Valley is the hottest, lowest, and driest national park in the country — and strangely beautiful.

Best time: April–October, varying by region.

8. New York — The City Everyone Knows. The State Nobody Explores.

New York City needs no introduction — it's the most visited city in the United States and one of the great world cities, with museums, restaurants, neighbourhoods, and energy that genuinely justify the reputation. But New York State extends far beyond the city: the Adirondacks in the north offer one of the largest protected wilderness areas east of the Mississippi; the Catskills are an easy drive from the city; Niagara Falls is accessible from Buffalo; and the Finger Lakes wine region produces excellent Rieslings.

Best time: April–June and September–November for NYC; June–September for upstate.

9. Tennessee — Music That Moves You, Mountains That Stay With You

Great Smoky Mountains National Park is the most visited national park in the United States — and deserves its popularity. The mist-covered Appalachian ridges, fall foliage, and black bear sightings are genuinely spectacular. Nashville is one of America's most exciting cities right now, with a live music scene built around far more than just country. Memphis adds blues history, Beale Street, and the best barbecue in the country.

Best time: April–June and September–November for the Smokies and fall colour.

10. Louisiana — The Most Un-American City in America

New Orleans is one of the most distinctive cities in America — a place where French, Spanish, African, and Caribbean cultures fused into something genuinely unique. The French Quarter's architecture, the jazz clubs of Frenchmen Street, the food (beignets at Café Du Monde, gumbo everywhere, charbroiled oysters at Drago's), and the city's attitude toward celebration make it unlike any other American city.

Best time: October–May. Avoid the heat and hurricane season of summer.

Before You Go: The Things That Actually Matter

  • National Parks Pass ($80) — covers entrance to all national parks for 12 months; pays for itself after two or three parks
  • Book accommodation early — Yellowstone, Glacier, and Zion lodge reservations sell out months in advance for summer
  • Rent a car — public transport outside major cities is limited; a car is essential for most of these states
  • Shoulder season — September and October offer lower crowds, cooler temperatures, and fall colour across most of the country
Our Take Based on traveller reviews, editorial research & destination data The US rewards travellers who look beyond the obvious itineraries. Utah and Wyoming together make one of the world's great road trip combinations and are still undervisited relative to their quality. Hawaii is expensive but worth every dollar for a once-in-a-while trip. If you're short on time and want maximum variety in one state, California is hard to beat. And if you've never been to New Orleans, go — there's nowhere else like it in the country.
