What Makes It Worth It

🏛 Vernazza Harbour

Cinque Terre is five villages — Monterosso al Mare, Vernazza, Corniglia, Manarola, and Riomaggiore — stacked improbably on cliffsides above the Ligurian Sea in northwestern Italy. Together they form a UNESCO World Heritage Site of extraordinary beauty: pastel-coloured fishing houses tumbling down terraced hillsides to small harbours, surrounded by vineyards and olive groves, with the turquoise Mediterranean below. The images that defined a generation of travel posters are real, and the reality is as good as the photographs suggest.

Each of the five villages has a distinct personality. Vernazza, with its natural harbour and colourful waterfront, is considered the most beautiful and is the most photographed. Monterosso al Mare is the largest, with the only proper sandy beach in the five villages and the most hotel infrastructure. Manarola's brightly stacked houses above the fishing harbour, reflected in the cove below, make it the most iconic view at sunset. Corniglia sits highest on the cliff (a climb of 377 steps from the railway station) and is the quietest and most authentically local. Riomaggiore at the southern end is the gateway village from La Spezia.

The famous Sentiero Azzurro (Blue Trail) links all five villages on foot — a full day's walk of around 12km with significant elevation gain. Individual sections vary in difficulty and accessibility (parts have been closed for landslip repairs; check current status before planning). The Via dell'Amore (Lovers' Path) between Riomaggiore and Manarola, reopened after restoration, is the most dramatic and easiest section.

The Cinque Terre Card covers hiking trail access and unlimited use of the coastal railway — essential for moving between villages without the full walk. Visit in April–June or September–October to avoid peak-season crowds; July and August see the narrow lanes at capacity. Stay overnight in one of the villages for the magical early morning and evening atmosphere after day-trippers depart.
