🏛 The Matterhorn
The Swiss Alps are the pinnacle of European mountain travel — a combination of jaw-dropping scenery, world-class infrastructure, and a breadth of activities that spans every season. The Matterhorn, rising sharply above Zermatt in its perfectly pyramidal form, is one of the most recognisable peaks on earth and can be admired up close via cog railway, cable car, or a serious mountaineering ascent for the experienced.
In winter, the Alps transform into Europe's premier ski destination. Zermatt, Verbier, St. Moritz, and the Jungfrau region all host world-class pistes with reliable snow from December through to April. The après-ski culture — warm mountain restaurants, fondue by an open fire — is as much a part of the experience as the skiing itself. For families, the interconnected resorts around Interlaken offer excellent beginner and intermediate terrain.
Summer in the Alps is equally compelling. The same mountains that draw skiers in winter become a paradise for hikers, mountain bikers, and via ferrata climbers. The Eiger Trail, the Haute Route from Chamonix to Zermatt, and the Panoramaweg above Lake Geneva offer some of the finest long-distance walking in Europe. Paragliding over Interlaken with the Bernese Oberland spread below is a genuinely unforgettable experience.
Switzerland is not cheap, but thoughtful planning keeps costs manageable. The Swiss Travel Pass covers trains, buses, boats, and many mountain railways for a fixed daily rate — excellent value for multi-day explorations. Self-catering in mountain huts (Berghütten) and buying food from supermarkets cuts costs significantly compared to eating out.
