🏛 Dubrovnik City Walls
Dubrovnik is one of the most beautiful cities in the world and, arguably, the most perfectly preserved medieval city in Europe. Its old town — a UNESCO World Heritage Site — is encircled by massive 15th-century stone walls that rise directly from the Adriatic Sea, their circuit offering one of the finest urban walks on the continent: 2 kilometres of battlements with panoramic views over terracotta rooftops and the impossibly clear blue sea below.
The city's history as the independent Republic of Ragusa (1358–1808) is extraordinary — a small city-state that rivalled Venice in trade and diplomatic sophistication, maintaining its independence through clever neutrality and economic power. The old town within the walls preserves this heritage intact: the Rector's Palace, the Sponza Palace, the Franciscan Monastery with its 14th-century pharmacy (one of the oldest working pharmacies in Europe), and the main street Stradun are all in remarkable condition.
Game of Thrones filmed much of King's Landing here, and the locations are well-signed for fans — but Dubrovnik was unmissable long before Westeros arrived. The cable car to Mount Srđ provides a breathtaking panorama of the old town, islands, and coastline. Lokrum Island, 15 minutes by ferry, offers swimming in a salt lake, a botanical garden, and a ruined Benedictine monastery in complete tranquility.
Visit in May–June or September–October; July and August bring extreme overcrowding (the city has implemented tourist caps). The Croatian islands of Hvar, Korčula, and the Elaphiti Islands are easily reached from Dubrovnik's old port by ferry, making the city an ideal base for a week of island exploration.
