What Makes It Worth It

🏛 Wawel Castle

Krakow is Poland's most beautiful city and one of the great underrated destinations in Europe. Unlike Warsaw, it was spared significant wartime destruction, leaving it with one of the most intact medieval city centres on the continent. The main market square (Rynek Główny) — at 200 metres per side, the largest medieval square in Europe — is surrounded by Gothic and Renaissance architecture and buzzes with activity at all hours.

Wawel Hill, rising above the Vistula River and accessible on foot from the main square, carries the weight of Polish national identity: the Royal Castle served as the seat of Polish kings for over 500 years, and Wawel Cathedral is the coronation church where 41 Polish monarchs are buried. The Dragon's Den (Smocza Jama) beneath the hill, complete with a fire-breathing bronze dragon sculpture at its entrance, is a gentle nod to the city's founding legend.

Kazimierz, the historic Jewish quarter south of the Old Town, is one of the most significant Jewish heritage sites in Europe. Before World War II, Krakow's Jewish community numbered over 60,000; today Kazimierz preserves their synagogues, cemeteries, and cultural memory with dignity and depth. The Oskar Schindler Factory Museum, in the actual factory made famous by Spielberg's film, is one of the most powerful history museums in Europe. A visit to Auschwitz-Birkenau, 75 minutes by bus, is sobering and essential.

Krakow is exceptional value. A substantial meal in a milk bar (bar mleczny) costs under €5; a pint of Żywiec costs €2–3; a well-located apartment costs €40–60 per night. Polish cuisine — pierogi (dumplings), bigos (hunter's stew), żurek (sour rye soup), grilled kiełbasa — is hearty, warming, and delicious. The Podgórze and Kazimierz neighbourhoods have the best food and bar scenes.
