What Makes It Worth It

🏛 Grand Canal & St Mark's Basilica

Venice is the most improbable city ever built — 118 small islands connected by 400 bridges, with 150 canals replacing streets in a lagoon on the Adriatic coast. It was built this way deliberately, as a defence against invasion, and it worked: Venice became one of the most powerful city-states in the medieval world, its wealth from trade filling the city with extraordinary art and architecture that remains among the finest in Europe.

St. Mark's Basilica, glittering with Byzantine gold mosaics and sporting four bronze horses looted from Constantinople in 1204, anchors the city's main square. Adjacent, the Doge's Palace served as the seat of Venetian government for over a millennium; its Gothic exterior and the Bridge of Sighs connecting it to the prison are among Venice's most photographed sights. The Grand Canal — Venice's main artery, lined with Gothic and Renaissance palaces — is best experienced by vaporetto (water bus) early morning before the tourist boats crowd it.

Beyond the famous landmarks, Venice rewards those who get lost. The sestieri (districts) of Dorsoduro, Cannaregio, and Castello feel genuinely lived-in and navigating their narrow calli (lanes) without a fixed destination is one of travel's purest pleasures. Dorsoduro's Zattere waterfront is perfect for an afternoon aperitivo watching boats on the Giudecca Canal; Cannaregio's Jewish Ghetto, the world's first, is historically fascinating and quieter than the tourist centre.

The nearby islands are essential: Murano for the glass-blowing workshops that have operated since the 13th century; Burano for its brightly painted fishermen's houses (genuinely one of Italy's most colourful villages); Torcello for its remarkable Byzantine mosaics and profound sense of what Venice was before Venice existed. Visit in November–March for lower prices and mist-shrouded atmosphere — though February's Carnival is spectacular if crowds don't deter you.
