Alabama is a state that rewards visitors who look beyond its complicated history and discover a geography of remarkable beaches, pivotal civil rights sites, and a genuinely underrated food and music culture. It occupies a unique position in the American story — particularly in the civil rights movement, where cities like Birmingham, Montgomery, and Selma were the battlegrounds for some of the 20th century's most consequential moral struggles.

Birmingham's civil rights history is documented at two of America's most important memorial sites. The Birmingham Civil Rights Institute, across from the 16th Street Baptist Church in the Kelly Ingram Park area, provides the most comprehensive and emotionally rigorous account of the civil rights movement available in any American museum. The 16th Street Baptist Church itself, where a Ku Klux Klan bombing on September 15, 1963 killed four young girls during Sunday school, remains an active congregation and a site of pilgrimage. The National Memorial for Peace and Justice in Montgomery — the Equal Justice Initiative's memorial to the 4,000+ victims of racial terror lynching in America — is the most powerful new memorial built in this country in a generation. Its 800 suspended steel monuments, each representing a county where lynchings occurred, create an overwhelming and necessary confrontation with history.

The US Space & Rocket Center in Huntsville is one of America's finest science museums — housing the world's largest collection of rockets and space hardware, including a full Saturn V (the moon rocket) displayed horizontally in a pavilion so enormous you can walk beneath it. The original NASA Marshall Space Flight Center, where Wernher von Braun's team developed the Saturn V and where NASA continues to develop the Space Launch System, makes Huntsville America's true rocket city. The Space Camp program, operating since 1982, has inspired generations of engineers and astronauts.

Alabama's Gulf Coast delivers an outstanding beach experience that is consistently cheaper and less crowded than Florida. Gulf Shores and Orange Beach offer 32 miles of brilliant white quartz sand beaches on the Gulf of Mexico — the same sand as Florida's Panhandle, at significantly lower hotel prices. Gulf State Park's sugar-white beaches and pier are exceptional. Bon Secour National Wildlife Refuge protects critical shorebird nesting habitat. The Southern Alabama culinary scene — peel-and-eat Gulf shrimp, fish tacos, crab claws at waterfront joints — is as good as anything on the Florida coast.
