What Makes It Worth It

🏛 Gyeongbokgung Palace

Seoul is one of the world's most dynamic capitals — a city of 10 million in a metropolitan area of 26 million that simultaneously processes its 5,000-year history, exports its culture globally through K-pop and K-drama, and operates one of the world's most efficient urban infrastructures. It is a city that has reinvented itself multiple times in the past century — from imperial Joseon dynasty capital, to Japanese colonial city, to war-shattered ruin, to Asian tiger economy powerhouse — and the layers of that transformation are visible in its extraordinary cityscape.

The Joseon Dynasty palaces are Seoul's most significant historic sites. Gyeongbokgung, the grand central palace of the Joseon kings (built 1395, rebuilt 1868 after Japanese destruction), spreads across 410,000 square metres in the centre of the city. The changing of the royal guard ceremony at the main gate runs three times daily and is one of Korea's most impressive cultural performances. Changdeokgung Palace's Secret Garden — a 78-acre woodland garden behind the palace, accessible only on guided tour — is the most beautiful green space in Seoul, with 300-year-old trees, lotus ponds, and traditional Korean pavilions. Bukchon Hanok Village, between the two palaces, is a hillside neighbourhood of 900 preserved hanok (traditional Korean houses) that offers the city's most atmospheric walking.

K-pop culture is a genuine, fascinating aspect of modern Seoul rather than just a marketing hook. The Hybe Insight museum (home of BTS and dozens of other acts), SM Entertainment's COEX headquarters, and the entertainment company building cafés and concept stores in Gangnam represent a $10-billion industry that has changed how the world sees Korea. Hongdae, the university district, is the creative heartland — street performances, independent fashion, and the city's most vibrant nightlife district. Myeongdong is the shopping and beauty district, where Korean skincare has achieved a global reputation deservedly.

Seoul's food culture is extraordinary. Korean BBQ (samgyeopsal and galbi over charcoal braziers), tteokbokki (spicy rice cake street food), bibimbap, and the vast variety of banchan (side dishes) that accompany every meal define a cuisine of remarkable depth and bold flavour. Gwangjang Market, operating since 1905, is the city's oldest and most authentic food market — the raw beef yukhoe and bindaetteok (mung bean pancakes) are the essential orders. Visit April–May (cherry blossoms, mild temperatures) or October–November (autumn foliage in the palace gardens).
