🏛 Cape Coast Castle & Elmina Fort
Ghana is the easiest entry point to West African culture: English-speaking, politically stable (peaceful democratic transfers of power since 1992), and possessed of a warmth and hospitality that makes first-time Africa visitors feel instantly welcomed. It is also the symbolic homeland of the African diaspora — the "Year of Return" campaign in 2019, marking 400 years since the first enslaved Africans arrived in the Americas, brought 500,000 diaspora visitors and confirmed Ghana's identity as a place of cultural reunion and reckoning with a shared history.
The slave forts of Cape Coast and Elmina — within 20 kilometres of each other on Ghana's Atlantic coast — are among the most powerful and sobering historical sites in the world. Cape Coast Castle and Elmina Castle (the oldest European building in sub-Saharan Africa, built by the Portuguese in 1482) held enslaved Africans in underground dungeons before their forced embarkation. The Door of No Return — the ocean-facing gate through which captives passed onto slave ships — has become a pilgrimage site for descendants of the enslaved, and many governments have installed memorial plaques acknowledging their nations' role in the trade. The guided tours are exceptional and emotionally devastating in equal measure.
The Ashanti Kingdom centred on Kumasi is one of Africa's most sophisticated traditional monarchies, with a continuous history of over 300 years. The Asantehene (king) still reigns from the Manhyia Palace, receiving visitors in ceremony, and the Ashanti military empire is still memorialised in the kente cloth (silk and cotton strip-woven textiles in gold, green, and red) whose specific patterns carry political and ceremonial meanings. The kente weavers' village of Bonwire is a short drive from Kumasi; the Kejetia Market in the city centre is among West Africa's largest and most overwhelming.
Practical planning: Accra is the hub — a surprisingly sophisticated city with excellent restaurants (the chefs trained in New York and London have returned in numbers), contemporary art galleries (Foundation for Contemporary Art, Gallery 1957), and a music scene centred on Labadi Beach. Best time November to March (dry season; Harmattan winds January-February can cause haze). Yellow fever vaccination required. Visa required for most nationalities (apply online). Combine with Togo or Benin for the Voodoo belt of West Africa.
