Bora Bora is the archetype of the South Pacific fantasy — a small volcanic island whose central peak, Mount Otemanu (727m), rises dramatically from a flat circular barrier reef enclosing one of the world's most celebrated lagoons. The combination of this topography with the particular quality of French Polynesian light — the way the water shifts from pale jade to deep turquoise to cobalt across the reef gradients — has made Bora Bora the setting for the honeymoon brochure image of the 20th century. Beyond water activities, the island circuit offers the dramatic contrast of Mount Otemanu's interior — accessible by 4WD or guided hike — against the flat palm-lined motus. The Anau village pearling cooperative produces Tahitian black pearls in the natural colours only achievable in French Polynesia: grey, green, peacock, and aubergine. The coral gardens at Anau are among the lagoon's most spectacular and less visited than the main shark-and-ray snorkel spots.

Practical planning: Bora Bora is one of the world's most expensive destinations; budget $1,500-3,000 per night for overwater bungalows at the Four Seasons, St. Regis, or Conrad. Budget travel is possible staying on the main island in guesthouses (pensions) and taking independent lagoon excursions. Best time May to October (dry season, lower humidity, excellent visibility).
