Port Louis central market is excellent for street food and a genuine slice of Mauritian multicultural life. The underwater waterfall illusion (sand cascading off the continental shelf) is best seen by helicopter or light aircraft — it's optical rather than literal but the aerial view is extraordinary — and it's the only way to actually see it. Le Morne Peninsula has some of the Indian Ocean's best kitesurfing conditions. January to March is cyclone season; travel insurance is essential.
