What Makes It Worth It

🏛 World's Highest Waterfall

Angel Falls is the world's highest uninterrupted waterfall — 979 metres of free fall from the lip of Auyán-Tepui, a flat-topped sandstone mesa in Venezuela's Canaima National Park, to the jungle below. Named by aviators for the American bush pilot Jimmy Angel who crash-landed on the tepui plateau in 1937 while searching for gold, the falls were already known to the indigenous Pemon people (who call them Kerepakupai Merú — "waterfall of the deepest place") for centuries. The falls are so tall that the water largely vaporizes into mist before reaching the plunge pool, creating a permanent cloud at the base and keeping the surrounding jungle perpetually wet and otherworldly.

The journey to the falls is itself the experience. Canaima's airport in the southwest of the park is the gateway: from there, wooden motorized canoes navigate three to four hours upstream on the Río Carrao and Río Churún, through jungle of extraordinary density, past pink-sand beaches and other tepui faces reflected in the river, to a jungle camp within hiking distance of the base of the falls. The tepuis — some 115 isolated tabletop mountains rising abruptly from the Gran Sabana savanna — are geological survivors from the Precambrian era (1.8 billion years old) and hold endemic flora and fauna evolved in isolation for millions of years. Sir Arthur Conan Doyle's The Lost World was inspired by them.

Canaima's wider landscape is as extraordinary as the falls. The Gran Sabana — a vast highland savanna punctuated by tepui massifs — stretches south to the Brazilian border and supports a network of smaller waterfalls (Salto Sapo, Salto Hacha) that can be waded behind. The Pemon indigenous communities inhabit the park and operate many of the tour operations; their knowledge of the landscape, flora, and traditional plant medicine is extensive. Roraima — the highest tepui and the most dramatic — can be climbed in five days from the Santa Elena de Uairén base near the Brazilian border, reaching a cloud-forest summit plateau covered in endemic carnivorous plants, black rocks, and crystalline streams.

Practical planning: Venezuela's political and economic situation has been severe; travel advisories should be checked before visiting. Despite the challenges, Canaima and the Angel Falls route operate reliably through established local operators. Access is by charter flight from Puerto Ordaz or Ciudad Bolívar to Canaima. Best time June to November (rainy season: fuller rivers, more powerful falls, but some days inaccessible due to cloud cover at the falls face). December to May (dry season) has clearer skies but lower river levels and a smaller falls flow.

Our Take Based on traveller reviews, editorial research & destination data Angel Falls is one of the most remote spectacular natural wonders that ordinary travellers can actually reach. The rainy season (June-November) is the best time — higher river levels make the canoe journey easier and the falls flow is at maximum. Dry season clouds sometimes obscure the falls face entirely. The Pemon indigenous operators who run the river tours are knowledgeable and the jungle camps basic but adequate. Check current Venezuela travel advisories before booking; the Canaima park and routes operate independently of the country's urban instability but context matters.
